Hi I’m Darren O’Neill an enthusiastic designer with a passion for learning and creating. I graduated from Carleton University's School of Industrial Design with a four year BID degree, achieving Dean's List status in my three final years and graduating with distinction. I also obtained Masters Degree in Industrial Design at Carleton University and defended my final thesis which was titled; Enhancing Winter Sport Activities: improving the visual perception and spatial awareness of downhill winter athletes with augmented reality headset displays. During the past school year I was employed at Carleton in the Architecture Fabrication Lab as a Printing Technician where I assisted students and staff with 3D printing, laser cutting, photo scanning and large scale poster printing on a variety of materials. For the first and second years of my Masters Degree I was employed as a Teaching Assistant in the 2nd Year Mass Production class.

I worked for Bombardier Aerospace as an Industrial Design Intern on project which involved constructing a scale model of the interior of a Bombardier private jet, and integrating a gesture sensing camera and projected display system into the mock-up to test the feasibility of the interface. The system was used to control cabin and entertainment system elements such as the lights, music, movies and various participants user tested the developed system for validation. Two years before that, I worked as an intern in Toronto at Future Food Studio, a studio that focuses on food, technology and design. I have also worked on a number of freelance projects for the entertainment company DNA Presents based out of Ottawa, over the past two years. I am currently living in Ottawa searching for full time employment.

Since a young age I have always been influenced by the arts. I enjoy sketching, painting, clay sculpting, building personal design projects, took lessons to learn how to play the guitar and piano and taught myself how to DJ. I consider myself an outdoor enthusiast who loves to go camping, snowboard, skateboard, hike and travel the world in search of new adventures and exciting experiences. As a designer, I strive to use products and graphics as a way to solve problems and improve experiences in everyday life. I appreciate simple designs however I am more drawn towards interesting and complex forms, that stand out from the rest.

I believe that it is important to design meaningful products, that evoke a strong emotional connection in the end user. Each design is the result of a number of variables and specific details that must be carefully considered and  successfully balanced in order to achieve a unified product. In most of my designs, I tend to use dynamic curves and hard edges instead of more organic forms. However my personal style continues to develop as I continue to develop as a designer.
